Ambrósio was just eight years old when decided that wanted to be a model, after seeing a picture of top covergirl Karen Mulder in a magazine: "I wanted to be like her", she recalls. She has stated on her official website that she enrolled at a modelling class at the age of 12 and at the age of 14 she was one of 20 finalists for an elite modelling competition in Brazil.
However, she felt insecure about her appearance, particularly of her large, obvious ears. So at eleven, had cosmetic surgery done to get her ears pinned back with complications for the two following years.
In 2006 on The Tyra Banks Show, Ambrosio said that the surgery had been a bad experience for her and that was discouraged from having plastic surgery again.
Alessandra Ambrosio has a sister named Aline Ambrosio, a New York City-based lawyer.
